Peter has been on the board of trustees of our charter school for the last year and a half. He has had many meetings and many late nights trying to help the school.
It started out as a fantastic school. It had a great philosophy and dedicated teachers. The first three years were phenomenal. Then we lost our director. We've had several interim directors, but no one has lasted longer than a year. Philosophies have changed, budgets have changed, teachers have changed (not for the better), and it was really struggling. Peter ran for the board to try and help out, but so far that hasn't worked.
Logic, reasoning, parent surveys, research, it doesn't matter. They don't listen. They have made one bad decision after another. That has been the only consistency for the last three years.
They finally made the decision that kills it for us: they voted to change from being a K-8 school to a K-6. We already have two charter schools that our children attend, Odyseey (the K-8) and Merit (9-12). We don't want to put just one or two children in a K-8 and leave the rest in Odyssey. And there aren't any charter junior high schools. So our options are to put our kids into traditional junior highs (not an option!) or switch everyone to another K-8 school.
So after 6 years of fine education, we're going to have to leave and find another school. It's the only school Jeffrey, Julia, and Mandy have ever attended. It's going to be quite a disruption. We're going to try to move them to a K-8 school across the street from our high school in Springville. If we can get them all in, it may be a blessing in disguise as we can pick them up and drop them all off together. Only problem is it adds 10 minutes to our driving time. Sigh..........
