We have been in a temporary building for the last six months or so while a new church was being constructed. We've had to drive to church, and we prefer to take one car. So by the time we get one kid ready, shoes are lost, and by the time we get another kid ready, someone who was ready now needs a bath. By the time we get to church we sit on the back row and we are late to 1 o'clock church!
Our new church is about four houses away. Maybe a block total walk if you count walking into the chapel and sitting down. So we came up with a plan where Sara gets herself and Mandy ready, Megan gets herself and Stephanie ready, and Jeffrey & Julia get themselves ready. Then any time after 8:30 they can leave when they are ready to go. So funny thing is, we made it to 9 AM church on time today--because the kids hadn't gone to bed yet! I even found Jeffrey wandering the house at 7 AM when I got up to make the baby a bottle.
So each group of kid left early to save a seat (sad part is, we now take an entire row in the new, and smaller, chapel!). Then I came, and Peter came when he was ready. It probably looked pretty funny to have the Rehm kids show up, followed by the parents much later. But hey, it worked. I'm sure people were probably wondering why the girls' hair was such a mess. When I asked them why they hadn't brushed their hair, they all claimed to have "forgotten" that part. Fortunately Peter carries a comb with him. He never actually uses it, but I find it quite useful on many occasions.
I don't know if it will work next week though. The kids will be starting school on Thursday. I was going to attempt to get them onto a better schedule, but for some reason it requires me to be available to monitor them, wake them up, and send them back to bed countless times. Rather difficult with a high needs baby. So they'll probably just start cold turkey. They'll figure it out eventually, right?
