My kids are tired of food. I know they have to eat, but I get tired of the whining and complaining and so I don't even like cooking anymore. So I've been watching some food shows, exploring recipe sites, and trying new recipes.
Problem is, my kids love watching shows like Master Chef, so when I present them with new food, I'm presenting it to a panel of judges. They definitely got the negative critique down.
The other problem is I have a bunch of gourmets. Kind of. As long as the food is prepared by a world class chef, they'll eat it. I can't afford 15 bucks a plate per person though, so I'm attempting gourmet cooking on a budget. Haha. Yea, right.
So tonight I made sesame chicken with a plum dipping sauce, homemade egg rolls, a platter of oranges, sliced plums and grapes, and some tater tot sticks I picked up at the dollar store. It took me two hours to make dinner, and frankly I thought it looked really nice.
The sesame chicken was thinly sliced and lightly breaded with bread crumbs and sesame seeds. It was perfectly cooked, still moist, and had a great nutty flavor. I thought the chicken was great. The kids? Well, they ate the potatoes. Baked with a bit of cooking spray, salted and peppered, they're weren't anything special. I mean they were good, but, we're talking something I just threw together at the last minute, and the whole plate of them cost maybe $.75.
So yea, I'm sitting there trying to figure out why I bother, why I try so hard, and why I don't just make them mac and cheese every night.Maybe it's because I hate mac and cheese and I'm actually cooking for me!
Hi Rachel! This is your cousin Karen. Try the blog on Andrea's link list. It is called the Recipe Shoebox. Great recipes and I haven't had one fail. They are super good and not too hard usually.
